B.7.2This paper is a continuation of my work on the graph drawing (layout) problem. In 2001, in one of my most widely cited papers (according to google scholar), I applied multilevel techniques to increase the size of graphs to which force-directed methods could be applied by several orders of magnitude. In this paper we describe a new technique which exploits the multilevel structure to approximate global forces, thus eliminating the need for a computationally expensive octree as part of the solution process. This simplification is a crucial step in work which addresses the visualisation of dynamically evolving graphs.
