Additional information

In considering the issues of automated assessment for both online and traditional learning environments, a number of researchers had suggested that the tools utilised to detect poor academic practice and cheating, namely plagiarism tools, might be used to provide assessment. This paper investigated those claims by considering the use of two widely-used and well referenced proximity-based plagiarism detection tools, within an online learning environment. The research conclusively demonstrated that these tools do not provide sufficient diversity and richness to cope with the demands of automated assessment, and is important because it eliminates them from future consideration in this area.
