Faber New Poets 4
As part of a wider programme of support for the eight young poets selected nationally, ‘Faber New Poets 4: Jack Underwood’ collected into pamphlet form new poems, alongside older work, previously published elsewhere in magazines and journals: The Rialto, Poetry London, The Manhattan Review, TLS etc. The scheme overall offered mentorship, an advance and a national tour, including appearance on BBC2’s The Culture Show.
The poems in the pamphlet vary greatly in theme and subject, with anthropomorphic love poems, an encounter with the Devil, and more overtly philosophical/metaphysical poems such as ‘Certain’ or ‘Theology’.
The ‘Faber New Poets’ were selected by a specially appointed scouting panel of leading poets, educators and publishers, drawn from each of the Arts Council England regions. The shortlisted poets were then asked to submit a manuscript to a further panel of judges, who selected eight poets to be published over the course of two years. The scheme was joint funded by Faber and Faber, ACE and the lottery, and supported by an international press campaign. Work from my pamphlet has since been translated into German, Italian and Malayalam, with invitations to read in both Berlin and Milan following publication of the translated versions.
