This co-edited volume is based on papers from an international conference on Hakluyt held at the NMM in 2008, which attracted 120 delegates and 45 speakers. Papers were selected, new articles commissioned, and the 24 chapters included were edited and revised several times by contributors in the light of editors' comments and suggestions, and external reports, both commissioned by the editors and by the Press. Editorial work by Jowitt and Carey was also required where English was not an author's first language. All work on the volume, including writing the Introduction, was shared equally between Jowitt and Carey.
