A new statistical approach for determining the crystallinity of heat-altered bone mineral from FTIR spectra
This material science based paper, which contributes to a large EU project, focusses on the phase and structural changes which occur in biomaterials (bone) during heat treatment and extends this to develop new analytical tools. Specifically, it provides a step-change in the use of crystallinity measures in the study of heat-altered bone. Aside from its technological importance, the work is of considerable cultural significance for example being applied to the important burnt material from Herculaneum (oliver.craig@york.ac.uk), with the aim of understanding the particular conditions of death.
