The patent protects the first work that mathematically links a branch of cryptography to silicon integrated circuit implementation to thwart side-channel analysis attacks. It presents the core concepts on how to link an m-of-n data representation to cryptography, actual application to two well-known encryption algorithms and a comprehensive list of patent claims. It led to a spin-out company (I-GXL Murphy CTO) and was leveraged to secure all of EPSRC’s impact related grants (Murphy named researcher): (GR/S81421/01, EP/F016786/1); EPSRC follow-on-fund (EP/G005273/1, ranked 1st); KTA (EP/H500111/1); Impact Fund (EP/I501150/1); and KTS (EP/H500332/1) awards. The significance of the work led to further research and development with a MIPS, California and Renesas, Japan.
