Additional information

This invited paper, published in the special issue on Intelligent Mechatronics, focussed on developing an automated approach for collision avoidance of unmanned marine vehicles (UMVs) based on standardised rules, COLREGs, defined by the International Maritime Organisation. The technique consisted of a reactive path planning algorithm which provides feedback to the autopilot of an UMV for steering the craft safely. The proposed strategy was applied to the dynamic model of an UMV and was successfully tested for both stationary and dynamic obstacles. This preliminary research was pivotal in securing EPSRC funding in the field of marine safety. (EP/I003347/1)
