Additional information

This study reported a polymer-based coating containing mesoporous silica nanoparticles with adsorbed corrosion inhibitor, which was capable of protecting a galvanised steel surface even after it was scratched. The work received considerable attention in the online media, and was presented at the European Colloid and Interface Society Conference in 2010. Because of the protection of a steel surface (rather than aluminium), it represented a major advance as part of a research direction that yielded several major grants (e.g. BMBF ForMaT Project: "Smart nanocontainers for self-healing anti-corrosion coatings ", €1.9M awarded) and the formation of a spin-off company (Smart Nanocontainers).
