MR-compatible assistance system for biopsy in a high-field-strength system : initial results in patients with suspicious prostate lesions
This paper covers the clinical validation of the first CE marked MR compatible robotic assist system for transgluteal prostate biopsy, which is difficult to perform under conventional CT guidance and benefit from the excellent soft tissue contrast of MRI. High-field magnets preclude direct image guidance but the robotic system, based on Melzer’s concepts and patents, allows biopsies in 1.5-3 Tesla MR systems. This robot became part of the £2.1m FP7 IAAP Nanoporation project (2009-2013), coordinated by Melzer and the £2.3m STREP FUSIMO. It is included in the follow-on £4.8m FP7 TRANS-FUSIMO (2014-2018) and £2.2m FP7 FUTURA (2013 -2015) grants.
