This paper describes the result which has been developed during the FAS-DOT project (€14.7M) in collaboration with a number of leading European Universities and companies, coordinated by Prof. Rafailov. The proposed novel laser has been patented and already licensed by M Squared Lasers Ltd. This work has been very influential in the development of a new strategic research direction and has already led in part to the new FP7 PHOQUS ITN project (€3.8M).
