Double-weighted statement

The book represents a writing and research process that goes back to 2007. It was published in the University of Chicago Press’ ethnomusicology series, the oldest and still leading monograph publication series in the field. It involved adding cultural history methods to ethnography - a significant methodological innovation. It also involved significant theoretical innovations - rethinking four case studies in terms of an overarching historical narrative (liberalism to neoliberalism in the Middle East), and a new interpretative framework - cultural intimacy. It won the Society for Ethnomusicology’s Merriam Prize. It has also been translated into Turkish by Koc University Press.
