Wandelweiser und so weiter
This 6-CD set features 37 tracks performed by various artists. My work is featured on 12 tracks as either soloist (2 tracks), ensemble member (7 tracks) or ensemble director (3 tracks). Since 2008 I have been particularly associated with music by composers associated with the so-called ‘Wandelweiser’ movement, music that is marked by its close attention to isolated, generally quiet, sounds and silences. Two of the most influential composers for this group are John Cage and Christian Wolff and so the move toward this area of performance is seen as a natural progression and consistent with my aesthetic and creative priorities. For research underpinning issues of performance practice relating to Wandelweiser see item 2 and the liner notes of this item. This set of recordings, as well as being underpinned by research outlined in ‘A Prescription for Action’ in Saunders, J. (ed.) The Ashgate Research Companion to Experimental Music (output 2), is also a culmination of previous performances and recordings including: 1. Daily performances of Michael Pisaro’s pi (1-2594), hcmf// 2009 2. Performances as part of RGAP exhibition of Sol LeWitt books, Site Gallery, Sheffield. Included a number of performances of music by Joseph Kudirka, Tim Parkinson, Michael Pisaro, Kunsu Shim and Manfred Werder (the last two composers joined Thomas and the edges ensemble for performances of their music) (2010). 3. edges ensemble (directed by Philip Thomas) performed world premieres by Jürg Frey, Tim Parkinson, Stefan Thut alongside music by Kunsu Shim, James Saunders, Christian Wolff, Joseph Kudirka, hcmf// 2011 and ‘Music We’d Like To Hear’ series, St. Agnes & St. Annes, London (2011-12). 5. Tim Parkinson piano piece piano piece (Edition Wandelweiser Records, EWR1005), Michael Pisaro ‘Fields Have Ears’ (another timbre, at37) (2010), James Saunders divisions that could be autonomous but that comprise the whole (another timbre, at44) (2011).
