Clay Diaries - A series of contemporary ceramics works responding to the South Indian pottery traditions
Winter’s research through ceramics production informed by developing world potteries is an investigation into production and functional design. Winter undertook a residency in Auroville, South India during which he made a series of works. His aim was to use ceramics to explore the structured line of every day utilitarian steel objects, often used in India instead of pottery. Working with thrown porcelain and stoneware, expensive and precious materials, Winter’s works change and challenge the context in which the original forms are seen whilst valuing the skill needed to make handmade ceramics.
Thirteen pieces were exhibited in a group exhibition bringing together ceramicists from both India and UK, called ‘Clay Diaries’ in The Gallery Square Circle, Auroville, South India (Feb 2012), three pieces were exhibited as part of Art Shanghai, 2013, and also in international Glass and Clay, (2013) at Pepco Edison Place Gallery Washington DC.
