Lima and Chullucanas - A workshop about developing ceramics practice in potteries in Peru
Building on Winter’s research into expanding ceramics productions within specific contexts, he was invited in 2010, by Allpa, the fair trade organisation in Peru, to lead workshops with potteries in Lima and Chullucanas. Village potteries in these areas of Peru are important employers but are under threat because of the changing market. The aim was for Winter, through his research into the regional traditions of ceramic production, to develop new techniques and designs building on those traditions, whilst being sensitive to the local conditions. In Chullucannas the traditional technique of berbatine and burnishing combined with smoke firing was used however new methods of production including vinyl cut resist were tested. In Lima new forms were slip cast from moulds and the use of ceramic decals introduced. Winter ran a series of workshops in potteries in both Lima and Chullucanas, working from artisans from across the region. The workshop enabled the expansion and adaption of the existing range and production methods to suit the modern market, adding new products for international export and enhancing the sustainability of the potteries. The workshops ran over an eleven-day period in 2010, and Winter further disseminated his findings through his paper, Developing World Pottery, at the Kith and Kin symposium, National Glass Centre 2012.
