Additional information

This paper relates to the machining of a next-generation burn resistant titanium alloy (BuRTi) designed to replace heavier nickel based alloys in the hot section of gas turbine engines. The work was performed in collaboration with Rolls-Royce to evaluate the feasibility of harder superabrasives replacing the conventional abrasives currently employed in production. Operating windows leading to significant improvement in wheel life/productivity and workpiece surface integrity were identified. These results were provided to Rolls-Royce for potential implementation in production.
