Additional information

<28> The primary significance stems from the multidisciplinary approach, which combined cutting-edge computational techniques for interpreting spatial data pattern with original approaches to microbiological typing in a novel analysis. Genetic data were collected specifically for this study, which engendered significant interest from infection specialists (tom.elliott@uhb.nhs.uk), due to the identification of a spatially clustered strain of MRSA in the Midlands. The conclusions were corroborated two years later by documentation of several similar highly successful and localised MRSA clones Europe-wide (Grundmann, 2010, PLOS Medicine). The work has informed several subsequent analyses (e.g., Chambers et.al, 2009, Nature Reviews Microbiology).
