Research Question: Strategies for spaces for creative work in a domestic context.

Methodology: Through specific designs; extensive client consultation; geometry and form; daylight.

The work explores the strategies and the specifics of making new spaces for the undertaking of creative tasks within or close to the environment of the home. It engages with the issue of working from home, and specifically explores the need for an environment conducive to creative work or concentrated study: connectedness to, and detachment from the domestic environment, but especially the development of clearly defined spaces through the use of geometry, form and daylight. In some cases through conversion of existing structures, or in others through a new building, the relationship with the character of the milieu seeks a balance –sometimes tense- between expressing the creative activity within, and the domestic environment without: to be a part of, but apart from their immediate context.

The investigation takes place through the process of specific design commissions from a number of painters, musicians and other artists and professionals. This involves thorough and detailed consultation with the client/user, and an iterative process of brief writing and design development.
