Additional information

This paper describes the first experimental demonstration of the optical microcoil resonator (MCR), which can perform as an effective multifunctional, compact, and low-loss photonic circuit. This demonstration (together with independent demonstration of an MCR at University of Southampton) stimulated worldwide research on MCR sensors (University of Southampton, Hanyang University, University of Malaya), nonlinear MCR devices (University of Southampton, University of Auckland), MCR gyros (Tel Aviv University, Stanford University). Development of the MCR technology can lead to the creation of robust, low-loss, and highly compact microfiber photonic circuit devices for numerous applications in telecommunications, sensing, and fundamental optics.
