Additional information

This work focussed on a practical application of ultra-long Raman lasers, namely supercontinuum generation. This method of generating broadband light can be used in many applications. The work showed how such sources could be created using low cost, non-specialised optical fibres and with reduced optical power which, when combined have the potential to reduce the cost by an order of magnitude. The technique investigated has potential for commercial exploitation and was the subject of International Patent No. PCT/GB2009/002063; industrial partners are being sought to develop this as a commercial product.
