Additional information

The paper reported a world record laser cavity length reaching 270km and opens a conceptually new direction in science and technology – use of a laser not as device emitting radiation, but as a communication medium. The paper was instrumental in securing the European Research Council €1.7M Advanced Investigator Award (ULTRALASER), Marie Curie IRSES grant (Telesense) worth of €350K and the EPSRC Program grant UNLOC £4.5M total (£2.1M Aston part). It led to 12 invited talks at the leading international conferences and workshops, and created a new area of research in communications and secure communications.
