English abstract

Can an ‘exceptional woman’ of the past be a model for today’s women and the object of analysis of a gendered historiography? Which norms and ideologies regulated the life of an exceptional woman? What are the norms and ideologies that affect those who write about one?
The article makes a convincing contribution to elucidating these questions by examining three recent texts on poet, intellectual and revolutionary Eleonora Fonseca de Pimentel (1751-1799). I consider the impact of the historical-cultural contexts in which they were written and of the authors’ ideological stances on the type and degree of ‘normalisation’ she undergoes.
