Exploring the usability of immersive interactive storytelling
<20> Researchers in Virtual Reality and Interactive Narrative alike have often used the science-fiction inspired ‘Holodeck’ metaphor to characterise the type of systems they aspired to build. This paper presents a complete end-to-end implementation of immersive interactive storytelling, which incorporates virtual actors, dynamic story generation and multimodal interaction within an immersive multi-screen display with stereoscopic rendering. We describe experiments with naïve users who had never experienced virtual reality before, which demonstrate its usability and potential for engagement, despite minor occurrences of cybersickness. The development of this system has integrated results from several projects (FP5 ALTERNE, FP6 CALLAS and FP7 NoE IRIS).
