Additional information

This paper was the result of an extensive, and on going, piece of work being led by the Evans group on concentrating membrane proteins in lipid bilayers using Brownian ratchets. The work was instigated by Evans (Corresponding author) and was performed by his PhD student (Cheetham – 1st Author). Evans was responsible for originating the ideas (in particular the alternating fields to drive lateral motion and ratchet types), advising and guiding the PhD student both in experiment and finite element modelling, and for writing the majority of the paper. This work formed a major chapter in the thesis of Cheetham, UoL 2011.
