This substantial single-authored research monograph (c. 175,000 words) is the result of a 20-year project to synthesise and analyse relevant data from across the whole Roman empire in several distinct thematic areas, such as ancient demography, religion and ritual and artefact studies. As well as being a comprehensive analysis of the primary sources, including several excavations conducted by the author, it draws on an extensive review of secondary literature produced in multiple languages.
