Breakdown of mineral oil : effect of electrode geometry and rate of voltage rise
This research investigated breakdown voltages and pre-breakdown time delays for different electrode arrangements immersed in insulating oil. The original results obtained in this study provide important information on the dielectric behaviour of mineral oil in uniform and highly-divergent transient electric fields. This information has applications in the design of high-voltage power and pulsed-power systems which should withstand electrical voltage stresses with a MV/µs rate of voltage rise. The results of this AWE (UK) sponsored research, which supported the development and refurbishment of AWE pulsed-power facilities, also led to further research with AWE [£43.3k, 2012-2016, mark.sinclair@awe.co.uk].
