Additional information

Urban models predict future spatial patterns of residential and workplace locations and associated travel patterns. These are widely used in transport and urban planning. To date, the models are severely constrained by computational efficiency; it is not feasible to run simulations for large areas in fine detail. This paper details a highly original method for representing geographical space that allows simulations for the UK to be constrained only by the resolution of the data. Two follow-up papers demonstrate the applicability of the method to a broad class of transport models. The method offers exciting prospects for global level urban modelling.
