Significance of output:

A new theoretical framework for understanding structure and scaling in wall turbulence is introduced. The analysis is supported by example predictions on a topic of intense topical interest, the very large scale motions in pipe flow. The theory explains known features and makes new predictions, and will guide future theory and experiment in the control of wall turbulence - a topic of immense practical importance. The work forms the basis for a successful grant application to the Australian Research Council forming a new collaboration between Caltech, Monash and Southampton, and a number of existing related activities at Caltech.
