Significance of output:

The solution of certain structural (e.g. thin-plate bending) and continuum (e.g. Gradient Elasticity and Gradient Plasticity, which model continua with microstructure) problems with the simplest form of the Finite Element Method, where only the displacement or deflection is discretised, requires continuous-strain (C1) interpolation. However few appropriate elements exist and a methodology for their systematic construction is lacking. This paper develops the only methodology available in the literature for the rational design of continuous-strain elements to a predetermined set of desirable properties. The methodology is generic and its adoption can lead to the systematic development of new finite element families.
