Significance of output:

Bus priority at traffic signals in the UK is normally provided for all buses, to improve bus service speed. To improve bus service regularity – the key performance criteria on which bus operators are paid - different levels of priority are required for each bus. This paper demonstrates this ‘differential priority’ (DP) concept, using algorithms developed by the Authors and accepted by Transport for London. The recommended new algorithm described in the paper is shown to be much simpler to implement and provides increased regularity benefits. This research result is applicable to city bus fleets worldwide.
