Additional information

In collaboration with Arup (contact: Associate Director), we developed a new understanding of adhesion events in wheel/rail contact. These events are important because they can result in train collisions. Methods developed uniquely correlate with the limited full-scale adhesion data available, and as a result have been incorporated into Network Rail technical specifications and testing protocols (contact: Principal Engineer, Track & Civils) for products to mitigate low adhesion. Follow-on PhD projects funded by Network Rail and LBFoster have been set-up to continue the work. This paper was awarded the IMechE Part F John Jarrett Davis Best Journal Paper Prize in 2009.
