Additional information

This paper represents the output from an international collaboration between tribologists and dynamic modellers (lead, Universitat Politecnica de Valencia anrocar@mcm.upv.es) to highlight deficiencies in wheel/rail contact modelling approaches (used extensively to determine contact and wear by commercial railway operators). The critical output was differences of over 100% in predicted force and rail wear when using modelling data appropriate for wet and lubricated conditions. This work has led to funded research projects with LB Foster Friction Management (contact: Managing Director) to improve this aspect along with friction and wear coefficient inputs to the models.
