Dr Fiona MacDonald is the Deputy Director of the West Midlands Regional Genetics Unit based at Birmingham Women's Hospital. She is co-applicant on a grant on Cell free DNA for prenatal diagnosis, one on development of next generation sequencing for sudden cardiac death and has been responsible for oversight of Phase 1 of CRUK's stratified medicine project for which our lab is one of three technical hubs, which has involved collaboration with Prof Dion Morton (School of Cancer Sciences, UoB) and Dr Jane Steele (Director of the UoB Human Biomaterials Resource Centre).

Professor Calman MacLennan is Head of the Exploratory Programme at the Novartis Vaccines Institute for Global Health (NVGH) in Siena, Italy, where he has a portfolio of five vaccine research projects and is responsible for 25 staff and students. He is Honorary Professor of Vaccine Immunoloty at UoB and continues to maintain a research base within the School of Immunity and Infection at UoB, working closely with Dr Adam Cunningham and Prof Ian Henderson, both School of Immunity and Infection, UoB). He is PI on a collaborative EU EID ITN between UoB and NVGH training four early stage researchers in vaccinology, immunology and microbiology in the context of developing new vaccines for global health and is Chief Investigator of a five-year clinical study in collaboration with UHBT investigating responses to vaccination in HIV-infected adults. His research interests are focussed on the development of effective and affordable vaccines for use in low-income countries against Salmonella, meningococcus and Shigella, use of bacterial GMMA particles as a noval vaccine platform, host/pathogen interactions and mechanisms of immunity to invasive Salmonella disease, and vaccinations in HIV-infected subjects.

Professor DF Mirza is Consultant Hepatobiliary and Transplant Surgeon at the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and Honorary Professor in the School of Immunity and Infection at University of Birmingham. His research work is based in the Centre for Liver Research and NIHR BRU Liver at Birmingham and he works closely with Prof David Adams, Prof Philip Newsome and Dr Simon Afford (all School of Immunity and Infection at UoB) looking at surgical management of liver, pancreatic and biliary disease; primary and secondary liver cancer; pancreatic cancer and liver transplantation.

Dr Bruce Morland is a Consultant Paediatric Oncologist at Birmingham Children's Hospital and Honorary Reader in the School of Cancer Sciences at UoB. He collaborates with staff in the School of Cancer Sciences at UoB on phase 1 and 2 cancer trials in bone and liver tumours. He is also R&D Director at Birmingham Women's Hospital and is on the Birmingham Health Partners Executive Team.

James Neuberger is Consultant Physician at the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, Associate Medical Director of NHS Blood Transfusion Service (NHSBT) and Research Strategy lead at NHSBT. His research work is based in the Centre for Liver Research and NIHR BRU, where he works with Prof David Adams, Dr Gideon Hirschfield and Prof Philip Newsome (all School of Immunity and Infection at UoB) on research into autoimmune and alcohol related liver diseases and clinical aspects of liver transplantation. He has a long-standing research interest in primary biliary cirrhosis and has been an active part of a UK consortium investigating the genetics of PBC. Current research funded by NHS BT is investigating the long-term outcomes after transplantation.

Professor Domenico Pagano is a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon and Clinical lead for the Quality and Outcomes Research Unit at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.
