<26> In a new approach, a geometry cache is used to accelerate the rendering of real-time crowd scenes. By storing the optimal set of character meshes at any time, the problem can be posed as the set-union knapsack problem which is NP-hard. Our 'greedy' alternative is shown to reduce by up to 40% the time required to visualise a densely populated scene. The technique is best applied when drawing a large number of 'second-tier' characters in environments such as stadia and is particularly useful for practical modelling work.
