This first scholarly edition of Yule and Burnell’s encyclopaedic glossary of British India, Hobson-Jobson (1886) involved careful selection in terms of cultural and historical significance from over 2,000 multilingual entries. The preparation of the introduction and notes required the mastery of a very wide range of sources and skills:

• wide-ranging research into literary, imperial, linguistic and lexicographic history;

• research into the authors’ biographies, Hobson-Jobson’s reception and publication history;

• translation from French, Latin, Greek, German and Italian sources;

• archival research at the National Library of Scotland, Royal Geographical Society, Royal Anthropological Institute, Oxford University Press, John Rylands University Library, British Library.
