<28>This paper describes interdisciplinary work involving collaboration between computational scientists and a leading theoretical biologist. The new framework developed in this paper, published in one of the leading international brain modelling journals, with a particularly rigorous peer-reviewing process, formed the basis of a successful Euro 2.3M EC FP7 ICT FET proposal (INSIGHT proj. num. 308943) which started in March 2013. The paper is receiving more than 150 views/month. A detailed critical appraisal of earlier approaches informs the development and investigation of the framework: this is not a review paper.
