Double-weighted statement

This monograph is interdisciplinary and transnational, merging literary and intellectual history with philosophy from both sides of the Atlantic. This required the development of a wide knowledge of the period that could also, at need, show subtlety and depth. In addition, Emerson is a major author and there is a considerable amount of critical material that needed to be digested from the last 150 years. Furthermore, Emerson’s collected works are vast (ten volumes of published works, sixteen volumes of journals, seven volumes of letters). Coming to terms with his intellectual development as recorded in these volumes was, itself, a major undertaking.
