Additional information

The Atom recommended practice for RAMLET specifies exactly how to map instances of the IETF Atom content syndication format to the terms of the RAMLET core ontology. By using the practice, any technique that maps Atom to RAMLET becomes predictable.

Both the idea of including the Atom syndication format as well as the mapping work itself were contributions from IEC. Atom is slightly unusual for a content aggregation format in that it is not primarily used for static compressed content archives. Nonetheless, IEC’s research into digital repository interoperability, Open Educational Resource (OER) sharing practices and system integration in further and higher education institutions suggested that Atom was used widely to create and share educational content aggregations. In practice, the mapping to the RAMLET core ontology confirmed a high degree of overlap with other content aggregation formats.

In addition to the Atom format, IEC also contributed the IMS Content Packaging mapping to the IEEE RAMLET set of recommended practices, and provided help in the realisation of the remaining formats. IEC made a strong contribution to the development of IMS Content Packaging prior to this REF period.
