Watkinson’s practice-led research aims to investigate the creation and placing of contemporary glass sculpture in the public domain using sustainable materials. Watkinson was commissioned by Northumbria Police and Gateshead Council, to create a public work that considered and gave an insight into the values of the police service. The resulting piece, Total Policing (2011) is 3 meters in diameter and sited at - Area Command HQ, Northumbria Police North Tyneside. Total Policing featured in the 'Craft Design' chapter of 'The Design Student's Handbook', edited by Jane Bartholomew and Steve Rutherford, Pearson Education Limited, 2013, ISBN 978-4082-2028-3. Total Policing forms the case study in Watkinson’s paper, ’The Nature of Site Specific Architectural Glass’ presented at the 2012 International Architectural Glass Symposium, University of Sunderland and ‘Innovations in Architectural Glass’ presented at the Parallels and Connections conference at the National Glass Centre in 2011. Watkinson's research and development for 'Total Policing' featured in a solo exhibition 'Developments in Architectural Glass' at the National Glass Centre' 16th Sept-18th November 2013. Including a public lecture.
