This co-authored paper with Prof. Kevin Hannam considers how printed ceramics might convey aspects of travel and tourism. The relationship between art and tourism has a long history, however few researchers have explicitly examined it. While tourism as a theme has been explored by some artists and photographers, few ceramic artists have focused on this topic. Within contemporary ceramics, print processes have become increasingly popular as a way to explore narratives, particularly in conjunction with vessel forms, but no research, to date, has examined the way in which art forms may be actually produced in the context of, and by drawing upon, tourism research. This paper considers the engagement between tourism research and artistic practices, drawing upon ethnographic research in Philadelphia, the production of original ceramic artwork through engagement with tourism research and analysis of the connections between tourism and art and the wider theoretical significance. It might appear initially that the diverse fields of ceramics and tourism do not have much in common, however printed pictorial ceramic objects have been widely available since the 1860s as touristic souvenirs.
