Additional information

‘Other Theatres’ continues Ames’ practice-led research into representation and recruitment practices of the British Army, the commodification of contemporary warfare, the pursuit of varying forms of virtual combat by different social groups as a leisure activity and the separation between the virtual experience and the actual reality of conflict. The presentation of the research, an interactive, multimedia installation, is concerned with the separation between the virtual ‘augmented reality’ and actual lived experience. Incorporating photography, video, audio and new media, this series of works bring together the world of military training, military recruitment, the normalising of the military amongst potential recruits and the world of virtual games, digital play and re-enactment.

Selected to be part of the exhibition You Are The Company You Keep, at Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Sunderland, 28 September – 23 November 2013. This exhibition includes seminal bodies of work by photographers including Paul Graham, Daniel Meadows and important contemporary figures such as Melanie Friend, Julian Germain and Martin Parr.
