Additional information

The focus of this research extends Thompson’s investigation into landscape-based sculpture. The works explore through sculpture the topography of particular landscapes through the journeys of rivers as they find their way from source to sea. The sculptures are based on the mapping of Rivers from Ordinance survey sources and from aerial photographs.

This work builds upon previous work about valuing landscape with reference to traditions of English romantic art and literature.

Through innovation in sculptural mapping the project developed new methods and gives new insights into ideas of place. The work was built using a variety of processes; water-jet cut glass and UV glue assembly, Sand-cast Iron, Kiln – formed Glass. The project was supported by The Henry Moore Foundation and Ironbridge Museum of Steel Sculpture.

The outputs of the research were disseminated through peer reviewed/selected exhibitions: Surveying Landscape: Brian Thompson and James Wade Jr, Otter Gallery, Chichester (7 December 2012 – 27 January 2013); Kith and Kin 2, National Glass Centre, Sunderland (Sept-Dec 2012); Glass and Clay (2013), Pepco Edison Place Gallery, Washington DC USA (1 March – 22 March 2013); Glass North East, House of Commons.
