Moving Wallpaper: Digital Interactive Projections
Richardson’s research into the use of computation as a new material for creative practice resulted in the creation of a series of original pieces of interactive, generative artworks which explore parallels with the approach and ethos of the Arts and Crafts Movement, making connections between digital and traditional design processes.
The aesthetic shape and form of traditional Morris wallpaper pattern (Willow, Jasmine and Honeysuckle) were translated into reactive, evolving decorative patterns responsive to the external environment. The movement of viewers in front of the wallpaper triggered the gentle movement of the pattern adding a uniquely computational element to the notion of traditional wallpaper design. Moving Wallpaper was presented at Offf the International Festival for the The Post-Digital Creation Culture (May 2009). Offf is an internationally established annual event for contemporary digital design practice and plays host to a range of significant voices within the cutting-edge digital design environment. Offf 2009 highlighted work from a range of digital practitioners including Joshua Davis, Stefan Sagmeister Neville Brody and Kyle Cooper.
Moving Wallpaper was also in exhibition at the Disconnect Festival, Venice (June 2009), at SHINE 2010: Urban Garden Festival, Sunderland, where it was projected onto the exterior of Sunderland’s Winter Gardens building (Jan 2010).
