<24> This novel study explored human optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) using principle component analysis to examine the temporal correlations among adjacent cycles of OKN (slow phases and saccades). Only adjacent correlations were significant and revealed three linked 1st order Markov processes. This refuted a longstanding assumption that OKN is a unitary behaviour driven by slow phases with a set gain, and proposed co-adaptive stochastic control of saccades and smooth pursuit. This has since been replicated (ms in prep) and has fundamental implications for all types of physiological and clinical nystagmus that have slow and fast phases.
