A Day in the World
A Day in the World is a touring exhibition project. Val Williams and Brigitte Lardinois were invited by the Expressions of Humankind Foundation in Stockholm to curate the exhibition to open simultaneously at the Kulturhuset in Stockholm and the Museum of World Culture in Gothenburg (9 November 2012 - 27 January 2013 and 25 August 2013 respectively), and then tour extensively around the world. Marcus Erixson joined the project as a co curator in 2012.
Collaborative curatorial research entailed investigation and selection from the extensive archive of disparate digital images, all taken on one day in May 2012 by press and individual photographers, and assembled by Expressions of Humankind's team. The research established parameters for the decision to concentrate on photographs made primarily by individuals, the final selection of images, their production formats and presentation on 30 cloth banners for display in a variety of venues. Curatorial research also focused on interpretation, giving equal importance to the stories told by the photographers as to the photographs themselves. The design of the exhibition, formulated by the curators, was an integral part of the project, providing points for viewing and for contemplation, including a ‘world map’ of photographs, which incorporated the ‘sounds of the world’ ambience recordings. Lardinois was also part of the team (not including Williams) that selected 1000 images from the Aday.org website, for the project book.
Co-authorship statement
The three curators shared the curation of the exhibition equally overall. Lardinois explored a number of ways of using the latest technology to represent the other images gathered through the Aday.org website, including enabling the public to use a tabletop tablet to access images from the website for projection on the walls of the exhibition. She researched the use of different languages for the final display, resulting in a wall piece.
