Significance of output:

The research described here extends and enhances previously reported work that demonstrates the successful use of highly novel miniature sensors able to directly measure fretting, a major source of failure in electrical connectors. Results are from the AUTOCON project (“Investigations into integrated wiring and interconnecting of electrical and electronic components for intelligent systems,” GIRD-CT01-00588) under the EU “Growth” programme. This work was undertaken in cooperation with Tyco Electronics (Contact Herr W. Stabroth) and Daimler-Chrysler (Dr. F. Huebner-Obenland) and concerned the detection and reduction of interconnection failures in automobiles although it has far wider implication in other important areas e.g. aerospace.
