Significance of output:

Over 20% of tropical forests are today managed by local communities, as community forestry is increasingly recognised to be beneficial for both forest conservation and local incomes. This is one of the first papers in the international forestry literature to highlight the issue of equity in community forestry, assessing how costs and benefits are distributed both between and within communities. Unusually, the paper draws on several comparative studies in both temperate and tropical countries. Led to Schreckenberg being awarded a grant of £250,000 (NERC NEI00341X/1) to do further research into the concept of equity in the context of ecosystem services.
