<09>Drawing on a substantial body of empirical research involving over 20 companies, this paper highlights significant discrepancies between expert software developer practice and existing software engineering methodologies. It led to invitations to a Dagstuhl Seminar on Meta-Modeling Model-Based Engineering Tools (2013) and to present keynotes to MODELS 2011 in New Zealand, EuroSciPy 2011 in Paris, and NOBUGS 2012 in Oxford. As a consequence of this work, Diamond Light Source, the UK's national synchrotron science facility, has asked us to work with three groups to help them improve their software development practice (Nick Rees, Principal Software Engineer, nick.rees@diamond.ac.uk).
