Additional information

Improving fuel economy through lubricant formulation is a key automotive industry and legislative driver and this novel mapping technique allows the detailed sources of friction in an engine to be revealed with confidence and simultaneously. Major output from an EPSRC project with Federal Mogul, Ford, Jaguar and Shell (EPSRC GR/M56326, £173k, robert.i.taylor@shell.com) and placed us alongside MIT (USA) and Musashi Institute of Technology (Japan) as global research leaders in this field. The developed techniques used in subsequent research in Leeds funded by the EPSRC, Ricardo and Shell; in total yielded 8 journal papers and 1 SAE technical paper to date.
