I do I undo I redo : The Textual Genesis of Modernist Selves in Hopkins, Yeats, Conrad, Forster, Joyce, and Woolf
The research for this monograph, begun in 2001 during a Leverhulme fellowship and completed in 2010, required the investigation of two fields: one extensive, the other complex. The first comprised theories of subjectivity and selfhood especially in the 'modernist' era; the second comprised the 'genetic' dossier of six modernist authors. Gathering the material, especially from the latter, involved painstaking scholarship - such as the transcription of unpublished or published but untranscribed manuscripts, held in diverse archives - and trips to study them. Fusing these two fields generated a complex thesis that demanded a time consuming process of analysis and argumentation.
