Additional information

This work was a collaboration with the School of Engineering and Materials Science at Queen Mary’s (experts in the creation of metal containing microcapsules). A novel technique is described, with future applicability within the medical sector, whereby these microcapsules might be moved to a target organ using a magnet and then ultrasonically ruptured to release a drug minimising damaging side effects. The new technique has applications in other sectors and has led directly to a project funded by Airbus UK (£30K, Jeremy Bradley, Surface Technologist, jeremy.bradley@airbus.com) investigating innovative methods to rupture sealant-filled microcapsules to improve their aircraft manufacturing capability.
